Brittle Country

Winter called me out today

After the snow had fallen down

Deep in the stands of the twisted pines

Dark and bright in the lingering light

High in the hills of this brittle country

My love, fresh and defined

Like my footprint in the snow

You fit to my life like my boot to its track

No doubt and no fear, we’ve made our home here

Deep in the woods of this brittle country

We move in the wake of our dogs on the fly

We sleep in the cold and stare up at the sky

We make shocking love and we never ask why

We know birth and rebirth, we know how to die

Drunk on the hope of this brittle country

You taught me the sight and the breath and the crack

The long stumble and the short fall

The knife and the blood, the antler and bone

Skinned all the way to the best I can be

I know who I am in this brittle country

I wouldn’t know if God spoke my name

I don’t think it works that way

But I know the glow of your sea glass eyes

The curve of the land and the lay of your hand

And I think that’s enough in this brittle country

We move in the wake of our dogs on the fly

We sleep in the cold and stare up at the sky

We make shocking love and we never ask why

We know birth and rebirth, we know how to die

Drunk on the hope of this brittle country

And I think that’s enough in this brittle country

And I think that’s enough in this brittle country
